present a project for students from
the Faculty of Engineering at the UAE
University sponsored Abu Dhabi Water
and Electricity Authority.
Project:
Designing steel beam carrying
concrete panel
From the Faculty of Engineering,
department of Civil Engineering, each
of the following graduates : Abdullah
Al Rumaithi, Ahmed Alamaimi, Hamad
Al Shamsi, Sultan Al Nuaimi, and Saud
Al Senani, under the supervision of Dr.
Amr Swedan worked on the project
of designing a steel beam carrying a
concrete panel.
Project Summary:
For students, the graduation project is
the first step towards professionalism. It
is necessary to choose a project to help
them in acquiring information and skills
necessary to develop themselves and
keep pace with the developments and
techniques in the field of construction ,
so that the graduate students chose this
particular project to learn something
new.
Therearemanytechniquesandmaterials
used in the construction world, two of
the most important of which are steel
construction, and reinforced concrete
as one of them may only be used, or
they may be combined together to
get their benefits in strengthening the
building. The technology of cement
concrete combining with steel actually
is not new , but their use have been
increased in construction during the
recent period. We can notice this in a
few projects here in the UAE.
The main objective of the project is
to design a beam through a section
consisting of concrete and steel and
then making sure that the beam
conforms to the required specifications
through some experiments to be
performed on it in the laboratory.
The students presented all the
objectives and outcomes of the project
through a report and some Important
materials used in the operations,
including cement, steel have been
presented.The students have also spoke
about is properties , pros and cons of
each of them, then the use of Section
consisting of concrete and steel was
compared with the traditional methods
of construction,. As this project is an
analysis and design, the primary design
will be presented in a simple way. After
that the initial design will be detailed.
At the end, the basic concepts of the
management of time, and resources will
bewritten alongwith recommendations
and the most important findings
of the project along with a plan
complementary to the second part of
the implementation
The Engineer has also tackled a joint research project betweenWater
Division at Al Ain Distribution Company and United Arab Emirates
University (Civil and Environment Engineering department) on
the factors affecting the consumption of water in Al Ain through a
field study included more than 364 participants distributed on the
different regions of Al Ain. The information were collected and data
was processed through amathematical model to find the relationship
between various factors and patterns of water consumption.The aim
of this field study is to support decision-making process with regard
to strategy of water demand management to ensure a continued
sustainable development in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
H. E. Mohammed bin Omair Al Shamsi, Managing Director of Al Ain
Distribution Company said on this occasion : “the conservation of
water is a world concern which importance in the world is increasing
because of the scarcity of water resources, so it is important to
point out the need for unity and cooperation among all parties
and individuals of the country to preserve water quality, publish
the culture of water consumption rationalization and to instill the
values of water conservation in the hearts of younger generations as
a national wealth that must be preserved for a better future.
