We are pleased to communicate with you through this page, allocated by
Al Ain Distribution Company for the Environment Authority - Abu Dhabi,
which is a fruitful outcome of cooperation between the two parties, and in
our belief in the importance of communication and cooperation between
organizations and government departments to raise awareness and spread
the benefits over the local community, in which the environment is a top
priority.
In the framework of the Environment
Agency celebrations of the Fifteenth
National Environment Day, held under
the slogan of “The Desert Is Vibrant”,
the Environment Authority - Abu Dhabi
has enlarged its campaign titled “United
Arab Emirates Free of Plastic Bags”, and
invited the public in various parts of
the Emirate to replace plastic bags with
environmentally friendly bags, which
are reusable so as to avoid the harmful
effects of plastic waste, including packs
and plastic bottles.
In February 2011, the Authority, in
collaboration with five of the major
retail stores and shopping malls,
launched the campaign “UAE Free Of
Plastic Bags” in Abu Dhabi with the
support of the Ministry of Environment
andWater. This campaign comes
within the framework of the initiative
launched by the UAE for banning the use
plastic bags that are not biodegradable
through a national program launched
to gradually replace them in order to
reduce the negative impacts of such
bags on human health and other living
organisms, in preparation to ban them
completely by 2013.
During this stage of the campaign,
which lasted four weeks, the Authority
encouraged shoppers in various
shopping malls in the Emirate to limit
their use of all types of plastic bags by
highlighting their negative impact on
wildlife in the United Arab Emirates,
where they are considered the main
reason for the death of 50% of the
Camels in the country according to a
study conducted by the Ministry of
Environment and Water. Plastic bags,
when they are disposed off in the sea,
represent a real annual danger for
marine life such as sea turtles, as they
swallow up these bags by mistake
leading to their suffocation thus death.
Since the launching of the campaign last
year, it achieved remarkable success,
which encourages the joining of more
partners.
On 11 February 2012, the new stage
of the campaign was launched from
the center of Khalidiya Mall, as many
activities for adults and children have
been organized, including workshops
for recycling and manufacturing of
environmentally friendly bags, and
Environment Agency Invitation
To Substitute Plastic BagsWith
Environmentally Friendly Bags
workshops on reducing the use of Nylon
in the kitchen, in addition to the special
coloring
corner for children, and the personality
of “hygiene inspector” of Abu Dhabi
Waste Center who encourages children
to rationalize and reduce the volume
of wastes, re-use, and benefiting
from its products through recycling.
A new episode of The Environmental
Program “Ask Ali” was presented, which
highlights the negative effects of plastic
bags on Biodiversity.
The campaign witnessed a decline in
the use of plastic bags for shoppers
in a number of commercial centers
in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi since
mid-February, in response to the
campaign launched by the Environment
Authority in Abu Dhabi, where more
than 30 thousand bags made from
environmentally friendly materials
were distributed to shoppers through
business centers participating in the
campaign, in addition to awareness
bulletins
describing
sustainable
alternatives to plastic bags.
A number of shoppers used bags made
of cloth, and reusable bags, in an
attempt to support the campaign and
participate in reducing the negative
impacts of plastic bags on human health
and other living organisms, especially
that the rate of using plastic bags in
the country is about 11 billion and 600
million bags.
Latest numbers documented in periodical performance re-
ports prepared by different administrative departments in
